Part 1 Talk & Speaker:
Lil’ Smart Bee: Telling the story of bee diversity as critical pedagogy to children in Guatemala.
Anne Basham, Co-PI for the iDigBees TCN sponsored by the Biodiversity Outreach Network
Abstract: The Lil’ Smart Bee project developed bilingual resources and a cartoon for the TCN iDigBees to teach Latino/a children in the U.S. and Guatemala about bee diversity. The story unfolds when a native stingless bee encounters a common honeybee. Senorita Honeybee builds a case as to why she is better than the tiny stingless bee—after all Senorita Honeybee has a stinger! The story of course does not turn out very well for Senorita Honeybee who realizes a little too late why diversity not only makes us special but is essential for survival. This presentation will show how biodiversity data can tell a story that will connect learners to not only the historical context of a local biodiversity but also to culture and the human story.
